Day 1 Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) to Can Tho
Depart from Ho Chi Minh city around 7:30 am, replacing the urban sprawl with endless rice paddy fields on this private transfer to the Mekong Delta.
We’re headed southwest to the river town of Cai Be for 2 hours drive. We board our boat to journey through Cai Be’s famed floating market. Here, we will experience how life functions on the delta, as we view the intricacies of commerce--how merchants purchase produce from local farmers.
We stop at a local working shop to see locals making their local specialties like coconut candy, rice paper, pop rice and sample some of them with a shot of local rice wine.
Now it’s time to try out local wooden sampans and pedal down narrow natural waterways. Get on land of an island to walk through fruit gardens before we taste some tropical seasonal fruits (such as longan, pineapple, watermelon, rambutan, jackfruit etc...) then go for lunch with delicious set menu. Relaxing on a hammock before we ride a bicycle for 30 minutes to explore the village on a small country road.
Re-board the wooden junk, sit back and relax to enjoy cruising along the canal for 30 minutes to Vinh Long local market. Back to the car where we have 1 one drive headed west to the city capital of Mekong, Can Tho city. As we go over Can Tho bridge, the largest bridge on the Mekong river we will soon get into the city. Stay overnight in Can Tho.
We have 2 options:
Homestay: staying at a local homestay which is located about 10km from the center of the city. Quiet place and you will experience how to make some local dishes for your dinner.
Hotel: if you want to see the city with local night market, Ong Chinese temple and walking down the river park of the city. Street foods are amazing.
Day 2 Can Tho to Chau Doc
Wake in the morning for a journey across the Mekong towards the township of Cai Rang by boat to see the hustle and bustle of Cai Rang Floating Market. The main items sold at this floating market are fruit and vegetables. Every boat has a long upright pole at its bow on which samples of the goods for sale are hanging. The waterway comes to life and transforms into a maze of hundreds of boats packed with mango, bananas, papaya, pineapple, and even floating pho vendors. Watch as vendors hawk their wares from boats teeming with produce and buy a coffee from one of the floating cafes.
Leaving the floating market to visit the busy local market on land to see the difference. Hundreds of people are buying and selling in the morning with a variety of fresh veggies and fruits and everything that make you amazed including a stop to visit a local rice husking milk factory that makes rice glass noodles or “hu tieu” that served as soup with pork and shrimp.
Back on the boat for more cruising along small canals admiring the scenery and the daily life of the local villagers along the way. You might see local vendors on their boat selling fruits or vegetables that they just get from the floating market. 1 hour drive by car to Bang Lang stork sanctuary that forms a wonderful area to attract stocks, herons from everywhere to fly here. Stop for lunch at Long Xuyen crocodile farm.
In the afternoon is a visit to Tra Su cajuput mangrove forest and travel by sampan through endless waterways flanked by mangroves and lush greenery. This eco reserve spans 850 hectares and is an ecological haven for fauna and flora, with more than 100 species of water birds and colonies of bats. The best time to visit Tra Su is from September to November when the water is high, although it is accessible all year round.
If time permits, we can also hike up to Sam mountain, an important pilgrimage site that is frequently visited by pilgrims from all over the Mekong Delta. There are dozens of pagodas and temples around Sam Mountain; reaching the peak is the highlight of the visit. The views from the top are spectacular and (weather permitting) one may be able to spot Cambodia! Stay overnight in Chau Doc.
